Mattress Recycling in Oregon: What Shoppers Need to Know

Buying a new mattress soon? Here’s Why You’ll See a Stewardship Assessment

If you’re purchasing a new mattress or box spring in Oregon, you’ll notice a stewardship assessment added at checkout. This fee is required by the Oregon Mattress Stewardship Act, a law designed to reduce waste and promote responsible recycling across the state.

The assessment — $22.50 per unit — helps fund a statewide mattress recycling program branded as Bye Bye Mattress and operated by the Mattress Recycling Council (MRC), a nonprofit created by the bedding industry to comply with the law.

MRC uses the fee to establish collection locations, offer collection events and assist large-volume disposers like retailers, universities and hospitals.

Only purchase a mattress or box spring from a compliant retailer

A retailer must collect a stewardship assessment on each mattress and box spring unit. This fee will be listed on your receipt or invoice as a separate line item and called a stewardship assessment.

See if your retailer is compliant here. If you believe a retailer is not following the law, contact us.
