Retailer Take Back – Oakland

Make it easy.
Ask your retailer to take back
your old mattress when they
deliver your new one.

Hey Alameda County! Did your mattress retailer offer to take back your old mattress?

Your old mattress doesn’t have to end up in a landfill. Your retailer is required by law to offer to pick up your old mattress, at no cost, when they deliver your new one (exceptions apply and take back may not occur at the time of delivery).

When a mattress and box spring gets recycled, the steel, foam, fiber and wood become new products. Like steel beams, industrial filters, carpet padding and even mulch for your garden. Don’t forget to ask your retailer to take it away, and rest easy.

If your retailer does not agree to take back your old mattress when delivering a new one, please let us know. Contact info@byebyemattress.com or call 1-855-229-1691.

Retailer Take-Back FAQ

Will the Mattress Recycling Council or Bye Bye Mattress pick up my old mattress from my home?

The Mattress Recycling Council or the program does not pick up mattresses from your home. We can recycle the mattresses retailers collect from their customers. Only in California are retailers required by the law to offer to take back old mattresses when delivering new ones.

I bought a mattress online and it is being shipped to me. Will my old one still be picked up?

If you’ve bought your mattress online and are having it delivered by a common carrier like the postal service, UPS or FedEx, take back may not occur at the time of delivery. The law allows retailers that deliver mattresses this way up to 30 days to pick up your old mattress. There are many ways retailers choose to meet this requirement. Ask yours for more details if needed.

Are there reasons why a retailer won’t take back my old mattress?

Yes, the law allows retailers to refuse units that pose extreme health or safety risks to their employees or other products.

Contaminated mattresses posing a health or safety hazard are not eligible for recycling through the program. Contact your city or town for advice on how to dispose of your mattress as solid waste.

A retailer didn’t take back my old mattress because it deemed it unacceptable. Can MRC or the store refund my recycling fee?

The fee is not refunded when a retailer refuses to pick up an old mattress. The law requires retailers to collect the recycling fee on any mattress and box spring sale to fund the state’s mattress recycling program. The law also allows retailers to refuse units that pose extreme health or safety risks to their employees or other products.
