Make it easy. Ask your retailer to take back your old mattress when they deliver your new one.
Your old mattress doesn’t have to end up in a landfill. Your retailer is required by law to pick-up your old mattress, at no cost, when they deliver your new one. When a mattress and box spring gets recycled, the steel, foam, fiber and wood become new products. Like steel beams, industrial filters, carpet padding and even mulch for your garden. Don’t forget to ask your retailer to take it away, and rest easy.
Retailer Take-Back FAQ
Will the Mattress Recycling Council or Bye Bye Mattress Program pick up my old mattress from my home?
Mattress Recycling Council or the Program does not pick-up mattresses from your home. We can recycle the mattresses your retailer collects for free. Only in California are retailers required by the law to offer to take back old mattresses when delivering new ones.
A retailer didn’t take back my old mattress because it deemed it unacceptable. Can MRC or the store refund my recycling fee?
No, state law requires retailers to collect this fee on any mattress and box spring sale to fund the state’s mattress recycling program. Contaminated mattresses posing a health or safety hazard are not eligible for recycling through the program.
Contact your city or town for advice on how to dispose of your mattress as solid waste.
