Rhode Island Mattress Recycling Program Commercial User Update

Effective June 22, 2026, commercial users will no longer be permitted to deliver mattresses to the Rhode Island Resource Recovery Corporation (RIRRC) for free recycling unless formally registered with the Mattress Recycling Council (MRC) and acting in compliance with all MRC reporting requirements.

Only mattresses that were used and disposed of in Rhode Island are eligible for free recycling through the State Program administered by MRC.

  • To participate in MRC’s no-cost recycling program, all commercial users must register with the Mattress Recycling Council (MRC) and meet the following criteria:
    • Provide documentation verifying that all mattresses and box springs originated in Rhode Island.
    • Be licensed to operate a business within Rhode Island.

  • Program Registration Contact: Dan McGowan, Northeast Program Manager

  • Important: Units delivered without MRC registration and proof of Rhode Island origin will not be accepted for recycling through the program.

  • Furthermore, please note that per RI General Law Chapter § 23-19-13.1., the depositing of solid waste generated or collected outside the state at the central landfill is illegal and punishable by fines and imprisonment.

  • RIRRC does not accept mattresses for disposal at the Central Landfill.

  • Mattresses found in mixed loads at RIRRC will be charged according to the corporation’s current fee schedule (presently $70 per unit).

  • RIRRC acceptance of mattresses for recycling from MRC registered commercial users remains limited to a maximum of three units per day. Larger quantities must be delivered directly to an MRC recycler. (contact Dan McGowan for more information)

  • Here is a list of mattress recycling facilities for units originating outside of the State of Rhode Island.
